Case Study: Rockwell Collins

Rockwell Collins, a leading U.S. defense contractor, faced a daunting task. The company needed to find a way to manage hundreds of computer-based training (CBT) courses produced by a wide variety of vendors. They wanted to launch, track, and manage all the data from multiple sources efficiently.

The company’s learning and development organization created a three-year plan. First, they would develop an online learning infrastructure — called the Rockwell Learning Network — from which to deliver 30 percent of the corporate curriculum online. The plan called for 60 percent of the coursework to be online within four years, reducing overall training costs by 40 percent in the process.

To achieve results on that scale, Rockwell turned to Jim Everidge, President of Rapid Learning Deployment, a seasoned training technology integrator. Everidge conducted an exhaustive needs analysis involving the Rockwell team and its multiple vendors.

The analysis showed that Pinnacle™, Learnframe’s learning management system, could best fill the company’s requirements for its new training system. Pinnacle is a comprehensive learning management tool designed specifically to connect to vendors’ courseware without requiring costly changes either to itself or the courseware. Pinnacle manages data from all training courseware, including customized programs authored internally.

“The universal connectivity of Pinnacle and the simplicity it presents to the end user are the key reasons Rockwell chose Pinnacle over other applications,” said Everidge. “Providing customers with solutions to multi-vendor compatibility issues is increasingly critical as self-paced training becomes a dominant delivery modality in the training world. Pinnacle offers the easiest possible solution by providing a seamless integration of the myriad of products on the market today,” he said.

Integration was a critical issue for Rockwell Collins. Rather than work with one source to provide all the training programs needed, Rockwell organized a team of vendors to work collaboratively to provide the best possible solution for its diverse needs. With Pinnacle managing training programs from all the course developers, Rockwell has simplified the management of online training. The company is also able to use its legacy courseware along with new courses developed internally or externally, saving significant time and money.

For users, Pinnacle offers one place to go to find the training they need on the company intranet. This includes the management of scheduling, registration, delivery, tracking and measurement — whether instructor-led or another form of training — via the Internet or LAN.

“As corporations expand their training libraries, they are learning the critical importance of interconnectivity, a capability that Pinnacle offers without requiring changes to the courseware, application or administrator program,” said Gary Tobian, COO of Learnframe. “Our ability to manage any courseware and all aspects of training with the delivery method of choice is why Pinnacle is at the heart of the Rockwell Collins training technology program.”

“Before recommending Pinnacle, I reviewed all the major training management tools available today,” Everidge added. “No other tool simplifies the learning process as thoroughly and as easily as Pinnacle.”
